Bust the Rust! How to Overcome Fertiliser Damage in your Spreader Bin

Fertiliser is amazing stuff! If the conditions are right, and you spread fertiliser on your crop, it can take it from ordinary to great by adding many different plant nutrients which are essential to the growth of your crop.

But while fertiliser is great for your crop, it's not so great for your equipment. Fertiliser causes corrosion, which means that the equipment you use in the process of spreading fertiliser tends to become rusty overtime and moving parts can bind up and become hard to use.

A part of a roll-over tarp system this often happens to is a splined universal joint when it is being used on a fertiliser spreader bin. With all the fertiliser that comes in contact with it, it can bind up can become impossible to adjust.

Sure, there are different things out there such as protective coatings and paint that help slow down corrosion but once the process starts it is pretty tough to stop on conventional metals.

Flanged Plates to the Rescue!

Innovation is our forte at Ellis and Sons Group, and after realising it's not possible to reverse corrosion, we developed preventative parts instead - the flanged plate universal joint and the flanged plate shaft!

Instead of using the usual spline system, the flanged plates bolt together, removing the need for splines and avoiding fertiliser getting caught in them and rusting over time.

As they say, prevention is the best cure!

Our flanged plate system has another special feature…

The plate on the shaft (that fits into the tarp pipe) has an even row of holes as shown on the left.

The plate on the universal joint side (shown on the right) has 3 lots of three holes, meaning you can make smaller adjustments if necessary (as the holes are closer to together).

Pretty cool, huh!
