Don’t Feed the Mice your Tarp this Off-Season

Harvest is now done for another year, and if you’re not currently using your tipper, the chances are you have parked your truck and trailer in the shed, ready and waiting until you need it next...

But, have you stored your trailer in the best way to ensure that rats and mice aren’t chewing the tarp to bits while you aren’t using it?!

Are you even sure that there is anything you can do to stop them?!

Well, here’s the good news, YES, there is a way to minimise rodent damage and keep your tarp as good as new and today we are going to share this tip with you!

And, believe it or not, it is really quite simple…

ALWAYS store the tarp with the bin closed (tarp shut)

So often we see tarps that come in for replacement or repairs that have been stored in a shed open (tarp rolled up) and the whole tarp is eaten out, layer by layer. We may think that this is the best way to store the tarp as less of the tarp is exposed and the tarp isn’t tensioned tightly shut, but in reality this isn’t the case. As long as you have a roof over the top to prevent UV damage it is best to leave the bin closed.

A bin that is open with the tarp rolled at the side creates a perfect, warm and safe nesting place for rodents. As it often has grain trapped into the roll this makes it an even more attractive nesting place as it comes with it’s own food supply! Eventually they chew through all the layers until they have cleaned the tarp out and you have no idea that this has happened until it’s time to use your tipper again.

So remember – store your trailer or bin in a shed with adequate sun protection – and leave the tarp shut.

It is always helpful to give you tarp a quick sweep at the end of season to remove any excess grain as well. (Note: if you aren’t storing it in a shed, we have another tip as to the best way to store it).

We hope you have found this tip helpful, keep an eye out for our monthly emails with more helpful hints; it’s just one of the things we do to give our customers the service they expect!

Until next time…
