Seven Ways to get more Life Out of your Hay Tarp

A good hay cover is an important investment in protecting your hay from the elements. With the right setup, regular checks and a little maintenance, there are several simple things you can do to help extend the life of your tarp.

Here are a few practical tips to help you get the most out of your hay cover:

1. Choose the right location
Where you store your hay can make a difference to how well your cover performs. Choose a well-drained, level site that doesn't allow water to pool around the base of your hay stack. Good drainage helps reduce moisture problems and keeps the area around your hay in better condition.

2. Make sure your hay stack is properly stacked
A well-shaped stack helps water run off the cover rather than collecting in low spots. Avoid dips or uneven areas where water can pool, as standing water can put additional strain on the tarp and increase the risk of leaks or damage.

3. Secure your cover properly
Make sure your tarp is fitted and secured correctly, with suitable tension across the stack. A loose or poorly secured cover can flap in the wind, causing unnecessary wear and putting extra strain on seams, eyelets and tie-down points.

4. Check your tarp regularly
It's worth inspecting your cover from time to time, particularly after strong winds or severe weather. Look for loose tie-downs, damaged eyelets, worn areas or small tears. Catching these issues early can help prevent minor damage from becoming a bigger problem.

5. Keep an eye on abrasion
Repeated rubbing against rough surfaces, sharp edges or protruding objects can wear through tarp fabric over time. Check the areas where your cover comes into contact any potential wear points, and remove any avoidable sources of abrasion.

6. Repair small problems early
If you notice a tear, loose fitting or damaged section, address it as soon as practical. Small issues can worsen if left unattended, particularly when exposed to wind and rain.

7. Store your cover carefully when not in use
Once you remove your tarp, make sure it is clean and completely dry before folding and storing it. Keep it somewhere dry and protected from prolonged exposure to sunlight, and avoid dragging it across rough ground when handling it.

A little care goes a long way
