Case Study: From Manual to Electric - A Tipper Tarp Upgrade for Jamie Harris

A new electric rollover tarp makes opening and closing this tipper a whole lot easier.

We recently completed a new electric rollover tarp installation on a tipper for our customer, Jamie Harris from Gulargambone, NSW, combining a custom-made tarp with a Razor Electric Rollover System.

The tipper originally had a traditional QLD-style manual tarp with flaps, ropes and rubbers. While it did the job, opening and closing the tarp was hard physical work.

At A Glance

Customer: Jamie Harris

Location: Gulargambone, NSW

Challenge: Original tarp was difficult and time consuming to operate.

Solution: A custom-made tarp with a Razor Electric Rollover System.

Outcome: Less manual handling, less effort and a simpler way to cover and uncover the load.

From Manual to Electric

With the original setup, the driver needed to undo the ropes and rubbers at both the front and rear of the tarp before manually rolling it open, then repeat the whole process in reverse when closing.

For a driver doing this multiple times throughout the day, that's a lot of hard work.

Now, it's much simpler.

Press the button on the remote and watch the tarp roll open.
Once loaded, press the button again and the tarp rolls back into position.

Working around the trailer's existing setup

As with any trailer, there were a few things we needed to consider when fitting the new system.
The ladder at the front of the tipper would have obstructed the rollover system, so we designed and manufactured a custom-made spacer to provide the clearance needed for the system to operate freely around the ladder.

The tight distance between the A and B trailers also meant the manual handle was difficult to access and operate. The Razor Electric Rollover System overcame this issue, allowing the tarp to be operated remotely without having to work in the confined space between the trailers.

We also needed to ensure the submarine door access remained clear and wasn't restricted by the new tarp system. To work with the existing truck configuration, we used the Razor Rollover Reverse System, allowing the tarp to operate while maintaining access to the door.

The customer had also added pelmets to the tipper, so we manufactured a new tarp to suit the updated trailer and incorporated the system around the existing setup

A Practical Upgrade for Less Effort

It's a relatively simple change, but one that can make a big difference to the driver's day.

Before:

Now:
A custom-made tarp with an electric Razor rollover system — operated at the push of a button.

Less manual handling. Less effort. Safer. A much simpler way to cover and uncover the load.

For trucks working on grain sites, reducing the amount of manual handling can be particularly beneficial, making loading and unloading, easier and simpler.

This project is a good example of how we can work with the existing configuration of a truck and find a practical tarp solution around it.

If you're running an older manual tarp system and looking for a more convenient way to operate your truck's tarp, talk to Ellis & Sons about what options could suit your setup.
