Five Things to Watch when Inloading your Grain Bunker

We all know the pressure that comes once the headers start rolling! So, while the bunker is filling, here are a few things worth keeping an eye on:

1. Don't fill beyond your planned footprint
As the grain gets higher, it naturally wants to spread. Keep an eye on the sides and make sure you're not gradually using space outside the area you've allowed for sealing your ground sheet and cover.

A simple tip: Mark the planned grain line with marking paint before you start filling. It gives you an easy reference as the bunker builds.

2. Don't let the wind take your ground sheet
Once your ground sheet is laid out, secure it against the wind. Concrete-filled tyres positioned around the perimeter can help prevent the sheet from lifting, moving or being damaged while you're inloading.

3. Protect your cover while filling
If you're pulling the cover over progressively as the bunker fills, don't forget about the section of cover that is still folded and waiting to be deployed.
Use the same principle as the ground sheet and position concrete-filled tyres over the folded section to help keep it secure and protected from the wind and other potential damage.

4. Maintain a smooth grain pile
Move the auger in small increments during filling to create a smooth, consistent shape, free from unnecessary depressions. This helps minimise areas where water can collect once the bunker is covered.
It may also be necessary to hand-trim the grain stack before covering.
A consistent profile can also help reduce wind flap and unnecessary movement of the cover, helping to extend the life of the cover.

5. Take a final walk before covering
Once the last load is in, take a few minutes to walk around the bunker. Check the ground sheet and any obvious high or low spots.
It's your last easy opportunity to make adjustments before the cover goes on.
